During your antenatal consultations, Motsema will discuss your birthing preferences with you. There are many factors to consider when choosing a delivery method. Dr Motsema will explain your options to you and advise on the safest way to bring your baby into the world.

Dr Motsema has vast experience in delivering babies, and works in hospitals where the populations are multilingual and multi-ethnic; where women often choose natural childbirth and high-risk cases are regular events. These events have prepared her to give the best possible care to low-risk women and be able to respond appropriately and promptly when emergencies occur.

His delivery care is centred around choice and partnership with his clients.He feels that women and their partners should have a choice in childbirth and that these choices must be respected. Dr Motsema will help you make decisions that will help reduce the amount of unnecessary medical intervention and optimise the possibility of a healthy, non-traumatic delivery.

Where unforeseen circumstances prevail, he endeavours to guide his patients through the various interventions that may be necessary such as induction of labour, Caesarean section and epidural. Some of these may not be desired, but sometimes they are essential to improve the chances of normal delivery or to ensure safe delivery for mother and baby.

Immediately after birth, couples may also have certain preferences. The couple can decide on issues such as early skin to skin contact, the use of drugs to deliver the placenta, when to first put the baby to the breast and whether or not to give vitamin K.

Women and their partners may have strong feelings about any one of these. Dr Motsema understands this and will try wherever possible to ensure that these wishes are respected.

Dr Motsema believes that birthing services care is best individualised to each couple and that the best and safest way to manage the delivery is chosen in partnership with them.
